Once you've downloaded the app and found an au pair or a host family that looks interesting to you, the next step is to start chatting with them.

We encourage you to ask as many questions as you can until you feel completely comfortable that the other person is right for you. Here are some of the topics you might want to discuss.

  • What interests you about becoming an au pair?

  • Why interests you about our country?

  • What are you hoping to gain from your experience with us?

  • If we asked, what you be prepared to cook for the children?

Childcare experience
  • What experience do you have looking after children?

  • Is there anything you found particularly difficult or wouldn't want to help with?

  • Do you have any references that you could provide from other parents whose children you have looked after?

Hours and daily routine
  • What sorts of activities would you propose with the children?

  • Would you be prepared to teach them your language?

  • How would you handle situations where one of the children did not do as they were told?

  • What sort of hours would you be prepared to work?

  • Do you have any other commitments that we should know about that might affect your ability to look after our children?

  • Are there any specific childcare tasks that you might have difficulty performing?

Living with the family
  • Would you like to be a close part of our family's life or would you prefer to have more time to yourself?

  • Would you prefer to eat with us or sort out your own food?

  • If you have any hobbies, what sort of commitment do they make on your time?

  • Do you have a boyfriend or girlfriend?

Cultural Learning
  • What sort of language course would you like to take?

  • What else would you like to do to learn about our country?

Entering the country
  • Do you need to apply for your visa?

  • Have you got medical insurance?

  • Do you have enough savings to cover your travel to and from the country (unless the family are paying)?

Background
  • Why have you chosen to host an au pair?

  • If I am your first au pair, do you have any references from former au pairs that you could provide?

Hours and daily routine
  • What specific tasks would I be expected to do each day?

  • What would a typical day look like?

  • Would I be expected to prepare meals for the children?

  • Would I be expected to do housework?

  • Do your children have any special needs?

  • What sort of activities do the children like to do?

  • Would I be expected to babysit in the evenings? If so, how often and for how long?

  • What sort of time off and holidays would I have?

The family and household
  • Where is the home located and what sort of transport is available?

  • Will I be expected to drive?

  • If you include me in your holidays, what will I be required to do during that time?

  • Will I have my own room and/or bathroom?

  • How much pocket money will I receive?

  • Who will pay for my language course?
